Freud, Jews & Judaism: The Jewish identity of the founder of psychoanalysis

Freud, who described himself as a Godless Jew, may have been the most representative Jew of the 20th century. HIs family followed a typical path from the Pale of Settlement to a middle-class life in Vienna. Although Freud was to write that religion was an illusion, he associated with Jews all his life and Jewish ideas suffused his works.

Robert M Kaplan is a forensic psychiatrist, writer and historian based at the Graduate School of Medicine, University of Wollongong, where he is Clinical Associate Professor. He writes and speaks on topics including Jewish history, genocide, crime, medicine and psychiatry and modern biography. His latest books, The Prophet of Psychiatry: In Search of Reg Ellery and Suicide3, are in press.
